Oil and Gas




Localised corrosion results from breakdown of the steel’s passive surface layer and manifests itself as crevice or pitting attack. Resistance is improved with additions of Cr, Mo and N2. Damage is more likely with increasing salinity, pH and temperature. Read more

Chloride Stress Corrosion




In the drop evaporation method, tensile specimens are increasingly loaded, in 10% increments, until the yield stress is reached. Simultaneously, a solution of 0.1M NaCl is dripped on to the specimen, the timing such that the previous drop has just evaporated when the next one hits. The test temperature was 170 ºC; the test is complete when failure occurs or 500 hours elapses without failure (tests in duplicate).

Hydrogen Sulphide Stress Corrosion

VISTAR® is qualified to NACE MR0175/ISO15156-3 (2009) under Annex A by composition and under Annex B by specific testing as a result of which, the allowable environmental limits are extended to 150 ºC, 700 kPa pp H2S, 13,800 kPa pp CO2 and 90,000 mg/l Cl-ion concentration. Read more

Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD)




A wide range of corrosion media is present in FGD scrubbing towers, the absorber and quenching equipment.

The corrosion resistance of VISTAR® is excellent in the presence of Sulphuric Acid with and without the presence of Cl- ions. VISTAR® outperforms other stainless steels by up to 60% in environments with high chloride content and low pH values. Read more

Erosion Corrosion




Damage as a result of electro chemical corrosion and erosion by particulates carried in a fluid stream. Total Weight Loss (TWL) is the sum of the electro chemical and mechanical effects and the synergy between the two. The results shown below simulate conditions of sand loading, temperature and seawater velocity that may obtain down-hole typically in the Middle East.
